EnvyTrends for Responsible Beauty

The Philippines has been dubbed one of many “sachet economies” as early as the 2000's. Single-use packaging containing toothpaste, soap, shampoo, conditioner, to face wash, creams, and tinted moisturizers are amongst the endless beauty products that demonstrate the multiplicity of consumer goods Philippine companies have managed to sell us in tiny pieces of plastic which continue to pollute our coastlines.

A 2019 study by The Global Alliance for Incinerator Alternatives (GAIA), an international conglomerate for Zero Waste, identified that the only true solution to plastic pollution is eradicating its production from the market.

Here are three ways you can help the movement and remain easy, breezy, and environmentally conscious.

1. Sorry, but It's what's on the outside that counts

Companies who claim to sell green cosmetics would pride themselves with using local and chemical-free ingredients and natural oils- effective and truly all well-meaning. However, the true and altruistic essence of environmentally conscious products lay in its packaging. We’re talking reusable-sturdy-absolutely-plastic-free containers from the feet up.

Reusable packaging are those commonly made from glass, tin, aluminum, and metals. However there is a myriad of eco-friendly packaging out there so the best way to spot them is to just look for renewable, recycled, or biodegradable materials on the packaging of the product.

2. Reuse, Reduce, Recycle + Refuse and Redesign

The 3Rs have long been the battle cry for environmentalists around the world. However the active burden that exists in the fight against plastic pollution lies dead in between the consumer and the producer.

As a responsible consumer, refusing to buy products packaged in plastic or non-biodegradable material sends a clear strong message to companies that have monopolized the Philippine Beauty industry through small, seamingly affordable plastic packaging. This would encourage them to redesign. This call for a boycott is challenging, yes we get it. In fact, it is almost unthinkable to forgo products that have been in our beauty routine since we ever had one. However, as we have seen the rise of many young, environmentally-conscious entrepreneurs in the Philippines, we have been blessed with more eco-friendly alternatives.
